HOWRAH  BRIDGE






THE SCENERY OF  OLD AND NEW CALCUTTA (KOLKATA)

The most popular bridge in India and the pride of the calcutta (kolkata) citizens which name is Howrah Bridge also known as Rabindra Setu
is a suspension type balanced cantilever bridge located in West Bengal, India. It connects Howrah and Kolkata. The Bridge is made over the
river Hooghly (a branch of River Ganga).
  • The design of the bridge was made by Rendel, Palmer and Tritton and the bridge was constructed by Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Company. The bridge is maintained by Kolkata Port Trust.
  • Howrah Bridge ranks 6th among the cantilever suspension type bridges. At the time of construction its rank was 3rd.

UNIVERSITY OF CALCUTTA







This picture was the scene of our great university in west bengal. Yes, you guessed right its University of Calcutta.The University of Calcutta (Bengali: কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়; informally known as Calcutta University or CU) is a public state university located in Kolkata, West Bengal, India established on 24 January 1857.[4] By foundation date, it is the first institution in South Asia to be established as a multidisciplinary and secular Western style university.


 CALCUTTA BUS STAND






This picture was the scene of  Calcutta bus stand near Howrah bridge,most likely on the Howrah station side of the Hooghly River 1944. Early times these types of vehicles were for public transport.


ESPLANADE








This picture was the scene of old calcutta which now known as Esplande (Dharamtala) in approx 1942.
Earlier times bull carts were also seen on the roads as well as vehicles.





OLD SEALDAH STATION




 This pictures was the old scene of sealdah station.Sealdah was one of the major railway stations serving Kolkata (Calcutta) in India, the others being Howrah Station, Shalimar Station and Kolkata Railway Station. Sealdah is one of the busiest railway stations in India and an important suburban rail terminal. After completion, Kolkata metro line 2 will pass through Sealdah.

 HOOGHLY RIVER






This picture was the scene of Hooghly river. The Hooghly River (Bengali হুগলী, Hugli; Anglicized alternatively spelled Hoogli or Hugli) or the Bhāgirathi-Hooghly, is an approximately 260 kilometres (160 mi) long distributary of the Ganges River in West Bengal, India. It splits from the Ganges as a canal in Murshidabad District at the Farakka Barrage. The town of Hugli-Chinsura, formerly Hooghly, is located on the river, in the Hooghly (district).
 The scenery along the banks of the Hooghly varies considerably. From the sea nothing but sandbanks and mud formations covered with coarse herbage at first greet the eye, then as the river narrows, cultivated rice fields and sleepy hamlets reposing within the foliage of beautiful groves, render the view at once pleasing and picturesque.



STRAND ROAD



The old picture of strand road in 1885 this picture was captured in the camera.
Strand Road is a major thoroughfare in the Indian city of Kolkata, running along the east bank of the Hooghly River, connects Fort William to Nimtala near Shobhabazar through the downtown Kolkata.

The Victoria Memorial, officially the Victoria Memorial Hall, is a memorial building dedicated to Victoria, Empress of India, which is located in Kolkata (Calcutta), India – the capital of West Bengal and a former capital of British India. It currently serves as a museum and a tourist attraction.

PARK STREET



 Burial Ground Road (now Park Street) in the 1930's, Calcutta.
Park Street has been the recreation zone for Kolkata people since the British era.
It was also the popular foreign tourist spot in Calcutta then and even now.

The High Court at Calcutta, formerly known as the High Court of Judicature at Fort William, was brought into existence by the Letters Patent dated 14th May, 1862, issued under the High Court's Act, 1861, which provided that the jurisdiction and powers of the High Court were to be defined by Letters Patent. The High Court of Judicature at Fort William was formally opened on 1st July, 1862, with Sir Barnes Peacock as its first Chief Justice. Appointed on 2nd February, 1863, Justice Sumboo Nath Pandit was the first Indian to assume office as a Judge of the Calcutta High Court, followed by legal luminaries such as Justice Dwarka Nath Mitter, Justice Ramesh Chandra Mitter, Sir Chunder Madhab Ghosh, Sir Gooroodas Banerji, Sir Ashutosh Mookerjee and Justice P.B. Chakravartti who was the first Indian to become a permanent Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.
The Calcutta High Court has the distinction of being the first High Court and one of the three Chartered High Courts to be set up in India, along with the High Courts of Bombay, Madras.
